With Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, you might be overwhelmed by the array of mooncake choices. To help you decide which ones to gift to loved ones (and taste yourself), we asked Hong Kong foodie Joyce To to sample a selection. Joyce runs the Instagram account @hk_datfoodlife, where she documents her high-end gastronomic journeys. Read on for her verdict!

For The Young at Heart: Ralph’s Coffee

‘The Ralph’s Mooncake Gift Box is another feast for the eyes, with a cute mascot standing in front of a telephone booth, looking especially attractive when the light inside the booth is switched on.

The mini mooncakes are revealed as you open the telephone booth door. Bite into them and you’ll delight in the molten Lava Egg Custard and the decadent Mocha Coffee flavours. Both children and adults won’t be able to stop playing with the box!’

For the Unconventional Chocolate Lover: DA CHOCO from Dalloyau

‘Hongkongers get lots of mooncakes every year, and the same variations of lotus seed, snow skin and so on can get monotonous. Enter DA CHOCO’s unique take on mooncakes: their “mooncakes” are really a crisp Valrhona chocolate crust stuffed with a salted duck egg yolk kadayif, or Middle Eastern-style shredded filo pastry.

I loved the sweet and savoury flavours, as well as the feeling of the chocolate crust shattering to reveal the crunchy filling. Then again, I may be biased as the DA CHOCO brand is launched in partnership with two Michelin-starred chef Eric Räty, one of my favourite chefs in Hong Kong. The set also comes with a Sesame Crispy Milk Chocolate and a Peanut Butter Crispy Dark Chocolate variation. A sweet take on tradition!’

For Those with An Eye for Beauty: Lady M

‘Lady M’s Jade Rabbit Lantern Gift Set is visually stunning. An intricately drawn Alice in Wonderland-inspired scene, bathed in a gentle glow, rotates gracefully inside the lantern. It’s a captivating sight that hides a delicious treat: six handcrafted mooncakes in Strawberry Matcha, Coconut and Tiramisu flavours.

The set also comes in a two-piece version, thoughtfully curated for those who want a taste of the action without overindulging. This smaller set boasts an Earl Grey Chocolate Mooncake and a Mixed Nuts Praline Chocolate Mooncake. Recipients of either set will feast with both their palates and their eyes!’

Of course, there are more mooncake options to be found here. But however you like them, we hope you enjoy good health and happiness this Mid-Autumn Festival.
