After a long period of being at home, full-coverage foundation has become somewhat foreign. Instead, we’ve been leaning into raw, natural skin, embracing all the quirks that come with it — think freckles, scarring, breakouts and pigmentation.

Overall, it’s been refreshing to take a break from heavy make-up and instead focus on skincare — layering serums, creams and oils in order to achieve natural-looking radiance. But with our IRL social calendars slowly filling up again, we’re currently seeking out sheer base products that will lift our skin without too much coverage.

Enter skin tints. While they’re not exactly revolutionary products, so many of our favourite brands are releasing beautiful formulas that blend skincare benefits with believable coverage. They afford a laid-back approach to traditional foundation, while also being super comfortable in the sticky summer heat. So, if you don’t already have a skin tint in your makeup kit, now is the perfect time to try one. We’ve put together a few of our go-to formulas, and some top application tips.

Tints worth trying

Whether you’re after a super glowy finish or something that looks like skin, but better, here are some of the best products right now:

Fenty Beauty Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint

Available in 25 flattering shades, this tint marries fresh coverage with long wear. It’s actually resistant to sweat and humidity, a bonus when it’s so humid outside. It also has a natural finish that’s hydrating but flexible, working to blur the look of imperfections without covering up skin texture.

La Mer The Radiant SkinTint

Part skincare, part cover-up, this tint affords just enough coverage to even out tone and plump up the look of fine lines. It’s creamy and nourishing, boosted with La Mer’s signature Miracle BrothTM for complexion benefits. It even has the added bonus of being SPF 30.

Armani Beauty Crema Nuda Tinted Cream

Deeply hydrating, this tinted moisturiser contains the anti-ageing complex ReviscentalisTM, as well as hyaluronic acid to brighten, smooth and illuminate. Because of the light fluid texture, it feels weightless on the skin, and works well to improve dullness, discolouration and signs of fatigue.

Chanel Beauty Les Beiges Water-Fresh Tint

This unique formula is made up of pigment suspended in a watery base that melts into the skin as it’s applied. It’s wonderfully cooling — perfect for the summer months — while the coverage level is enough to conceal breakouts, marks and scarring.

Application Tips

One of the best features of skin tints is that they’re generally easy to apply! Start with a hydrated base, then using either fingers, a brush or a blending sponge, apply a small amount of product into the centre of your face (this is often where we desire the most coverage, so it makes sense to concentrate the product here). Buff the tint into your skin, moving towards the outer edges of your face. Depending on your tool of choice, it might be worth a final blend using your fingers — the warmth will ensure a seamless finish.

If you desire more coverage or have a blemish you’d like to hide, spot a little concealer on top and pat it in with your fingertips. This way, you won’t disturb the fresh, natural finish. Those with an oily complexion might like to dust a tiny amount of pressed or translucent powder across the t-zone, but otherwise — enjoy your healthy glow!
