In Part 2 of our 3-part wardrobe overhaul series (see Part 1 here), The Style Sheet shows you how to build a capsule wardrobe with ten key staples that will get a workout all year round.

Before getting caught up in transitional trends (we’ll get to those next time) build a capsule collection of wardrobe essentials that will never wear out their welcome.

‘The main thing to remember when building the basics for a capsule wardrobe is to invest in fewer pieces, but of higher quality,’ shares local personal stylist and shopper Ihna Holtermann. ‘This is particularly the case for T-shirts and jeans; spend more on styles that fit you the best and have the highest quality fabrics that should last season after season. If you’re struggling with determining whether a piece is a considered a wardrobe essential, ask yourself three questions: Can you wear the item on high rotation? Could it anchor most of the trend-based items in your wardrobe? Is it high-quality enough to last the distance?’

Here, Holtermann takes The Style Sheet through ten carefully considered womenswear pieces that form a perfectly well-rounded capsule collection.

1. The Blue Jeans

‘The perfect-fitting pair of blue jeans in whichever style suits you best is a must. I would suggest classic, unfussy mid-wash denim – no whiskers, no rips, no embellishment – so they’ll always be in style.’

2. The Plain T-Shirts

‘You’ll need plain T-shirts in white, grey and black. As for shape, a crew neckline is always a classic option. Just don’t go too tight with the fit – your tee should hug your body, not stretch over it.’

3. The Cashmere Sweater

‘Opt for a soft, relaxed “boyfriend” fit when buying a cashmere sweater. Colour-wise, stick with a neutral like grey, black or camel.’

4. The White Button-Down Shirt

‘Pick a looser style in breathable cotton and skip fussy details in place of simple buttons.’

5. The Black Cigarette Pants

‘Smart, black trousers are a must. Keep the fit sharp – a touch of elastane helps pants keep their shape and allows for a little stretch.’

6. The Red Suede Heels

‘Not every piece in your capsule needs to strictly be neutral. A classic pair of red pumps offers your wardrobe a much-needed pop of colour that is surprisingly versatile.’

7. The Black Silk Slip

‘A total style chameleon, opt for a black silk slip that falls below the knee so it’s versatile enough to take you from the office to the bar – and everything in between.’

8. The Canvas Sneakers

‘In recent years, box-fresh white sneakers have become a new cult classic. I’d recommend opting for a slim canvas pair, for an always-in-style retro approach.’

9. The Black Pumps

‘The sleek, black pointed-toe pump is a Kondo-proof forever piece. The stiletto height comes down to personal preference, but anything over five inches you probably won’t find yourself wearing that regularly.’

10. The White Dress

‘Eternally chic dressed up or down. Pick a white dress in a simple, flattering silhouette in either linen or cotton.’
