Within the up-and-coming creative hub of Hong Kong’s Wong Chuk Hang lies Bean Buro, the architecture and interior design studio led by Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui. The pair’s design style celebrates a mutual belief in natural beauty, restorative materials, sustainable practices and embracing unique, quirky details — an approach reflected in their own space.

Here, Lorène and Kenny give The Style Sheet a tour of their enviable creative studio, and share insight into their craft and aesthetic.

Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui and Lorène Faure of Hong Kong design firm Bean Buro have created a unique, convivial space in their Wong Chuk Hang studio

The Style Sheet: How would you describe your design ethos?

Lorène: We love to think of design as a narrative, the user’s story within the space.  We listen to our clients, create a unique narrative and come up with poetic inspirations and interpretations. We want our design to feel natural, intuitive and effortless, with a touch of quirkiness. We like using natural materials, muted colours and access to natural light. We’re also committed to sustainable practices, choosing eco-friendly materials and encouraging our clients to reach sustainable standards.

Kenny: We believe in natural beauty, restorative materials and sustainable practices. As Lorène said, we’re also passionate about introducing some unique details and elements, giving the space a personality.

The duo love using ‘natural materials, muted colours and access to natural light’, and this is reflected in the space. Having access to their materials library is important for design discussions

What did you set out to achieve with your studio space?

Kenny: The main idea was to have a space where our team of designers could feel happy and relaxed. We believe the best ideas are created by colleagues who trust each other. We foster the concept of family. We also love the idea of having a space to display our work, inspirations and materials library — we enjoy discussing new design ideas and concepts with references and physical samples.

Bean Buro’s library is full of design references and inspirations

How would you describe the space?

Lorène: A positive and vibrant but gentle energy. We encourage social interactions so people feel at home. There’s usually music playing in the background, different scents and air diffusers, and we’ve created multiple points for informal chitchats. We incorporated some soft furnishings such as acoustic panels, rugs and curtains to make the space cosy, and our artworks are present all over to inspire creativity.

The space also features the founders’ artworks, and is perfect for staff and client collaboration
