Guest Editor’s Picks: Mayo Wo’s CNY Style

With Chinese New Year celebrations almost upon us, it’s time to start thinking about what to wear to usher in a prosperous and stylish new beginning — which is exactly why we called on Hong Kong style influencer Mayo Wo of Instagram account Mellow Mayo to help.

Mayo is known for her playful, dreamy outfits that lean into a touch of the nostalgic. She’s not one to shy away from bright colour — vibrant reds, pretty pinks and pops of golden yellow are common themes on her feed — making her a particularly apt source of style inspiration for bold Spring Festival dressing. Not only does her love of vivid hues make her stand out, but Mayo says it sparks inner joy, too. ‘I believe in colour therapy, so I’m always in bright or pastel palettes to boost my mood,’ she tells us.

For Lunar New Year, it’s the covetable Bottega Veneta Sardine Top Handle Bag in syrup red that’s topping Mayo’s wish list. ‘It’s festive but contemporary, with a timeless appeal. I’d style it with a burgundy coat so the red pops, and accessorise it with gold jewellery and statement rings.’

As for where she’s heading this Lunar New Year, cosy catchups with loved ones are on the cards. ‘I’ll be getting together with family and friends and eating poon choi and loads of carrot cake,’ she says. ‘I’ll definitely reserve the last public holiday for a bit of rest as well!”
