Neck, chest and décolletage care has been coming into higher focus within the skincare arena over the last few years — and it’s making us wish we were paying more attention sooner. The skin in this area is thinner and more delicate than our face, and while is it more ‘stretchy’ than facial skin, its repetitive movement and the downward pull of our neck muscles makes it prone to deeper wrinkles.

Adding to this, the stress that’s placed on the neck, shoulders and upper back as a result of being on our phones and laptops — coined ‘tech neck’ — means lines and sagging is now showing up for many people in their 20s, earlier than ever before.

Luckily, along with a growing bounty of skincare products targeting the problem, there are also some simple daily switch-ups that can help you keep the skin between your chin and your chest healthy and taut. Here’s how.

1. Invest in targeted treatments

Invest in targeted, intensive neck and décolletage treatments such as La Mer’s The Neck and Décolleté Concentrate, which delivers on concentrated cell-renewing Miracle Broth™ to help create a more youthful-looking neckline. Estée Lauder’s Resilience Multi-Effect Tri-Peptide Face and Neck Creme is another multipurpose wonder that harnesses the brand’s ‘tri-peptide complex’ to repair and boost collagen in this area.

2. Treat yourself to a daily massage

Incorporating the right facial massage techniques into the daily application of products on your neck and décolletage will bring more blood cells and oxygen to the skin and aid better absorption of products, resulting in firmer, younger skin. Massage in your daily products using light, quick strokes up the neck to the jawline, followed by small, circular movements with the fingertips from the centre of your décolletage outward. For even more beneficial results, swap your fingers for a facial roller, such as the RéVive Révolve Contour Massage Roller. Remember, consistency is key; for best results, do this for five to ten minutes daily.

3. Change the aim of your fragrance

Due to the high sensitivity of the skin on the neck and collarbone, it’s best to avoid the naked skin around this area when it comes to spraying on your daily dose of fragrance. Alcohol, which forms the base of most scents, is not only drying but can increase the effects of ultraviolet rays, making the skin in that area more susceptible to sun damage. Instead, spritz your fragrance onto your hair, your wrists or the collar of your clothing.

4. Amp up your exercise routine

If combating ‘tech neck’ by minimising the time spent on devices isn’t realistic, daily exercises can keep your neck and chest more toned and healthy. If you’re at your desk, try sitting on your hands or holding the bottom of your chair, and sit up as tall as possible. Tilt your head to one side, pushing your ear down towards your shoulder. Next, push your shoulders down for a deeper stretch. Hold this pose for ten seconds on each side, and repeat three to five times throughout your day.

5. Don’t forget the sunscreen

We all know by now that sunscreen application is 101 when it comes to keeping the signs of ageing at bay, so make sure you apply it to your neck, chest and décolletage with the diligence you’ve been applying to your face. Use your favourite facial sunscreen, or invest in a neck-centric product such as RéVive Fermitif Neck Renewal Cream. Make sure you apply the product on the front, then to the sides of your neck and all the way back to your hairline.
