Kelly and Walsh began as a publisher and retailer in Shanghai in the 1870s. The books published were in English and mostly on topics of Asian culture. It gradually grew to having offices in Yokohama, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Many of its books were beautiful books with silk bindings and fold out maps. In the 1950's, it established itself as a retailer in Hong Kong.
