With an awe-inspiring itinerary filled with exhibitions, installations, live art and events, the annual Swire Properties Arts Month – which aims to celebrate and foster creativity within the community – is currently in swing.


Here, The Style Sheet rounds up our picks of the programme’s must-visits, giving you a source of inspiration for what to prioritise during one of Hong Kong’s most event-packed periods.

1. Spiral Scratch

What: A showcase of Scottish 2005 Turner Prize nominee Jim Lambie’s new work, Spiral Scratch. Featuring a vast floor design of intricate, rhythmic patterns and 15 luminous-coloured ladders installed with mirrors, the site-specific work creates a kaleidoscopic exploration of colour, shape Jand form in the space.

When: 19 March–8 April 2018

Where: Pacific Place, Admiralty

Why we’re excited: To see the legendary artist’s impressive work up close. Plus, the sweeping, statement backdrop makes for one of the best photo opportunities all art month.

2. Notating Beauty that Moves

What: Created by Hong Kong Sinfonietta and curated by two leading local artists, Samson Young and Yang Yeung, Notating Beauty That Moves – Music at an Exhibition is composed of works from drawings to moving images, texts, photography and paintings, including works from international avant-garde composers.

When: 3–29 March 2018

Where: ArtisTree, Taikoo Place, Quarry Bay

Why we’re excited: There’s a buzz-worthy series of concerts accompanying the exhibition, including a performance from acclaimed Australian group Ensemble Offspring.

3. Live Urban Art

What: As part of street art celebration Live Urban Art, three eminent British artists – Phil Ashcroft, Graeme Brusby and Duncan Jago – each show off their talent through live mural painting demonstrations.

When: 22, 23 and 26 March

Where: Taikoo Park, Taikoo Place

Why we’re excited: We can take a slice of the action home – the murals are composed of smaller canvasses which are up for sale. The cherry on top? Art proceeds will go to the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation’s programme for disadvantaged youth.

4. Swire Properties VIP Lounge “Cumulus” & Dialogue Series

What: Set in a free-flowing space inspired by the natural beauty and grandeur of clouds in the sky, Swire Properties VIP Lounge is a creativity-provoking structure designed by architect Stanley Siu. The space also serves as a venue for the much-anticipated Swire Properties Dialogue Series, filled with panel discussions and curated talks from industry experts and artists.

When: 27–31 March 2018

Where: Art Basel, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre

Why we’re excited: Leading art world figures – including expert and BBC presenter Tim Marlow and innovator Daan Roosegaarde – will be taking the Dialogue Series’ floor.

5. Remi Rough

What: On a mission to create fresh engagement with public space, British street artist Remi Rough will use geometric designs to transform an exit at Quarry Bay MTR station into a vivid experience.

When: 23-31 March 2018

Where: Taikoo Place exit at Quarry Bay MTR station

Why we’re excited: The mundane MTR routine will get a little livelier!
