Just made the purchase of your dreams? Picturing yourself wearing this enviable item for seasons to come? You’d better learn how to care for that beautiful fabric! As always, we’ve got you covered.

Silk

Silk dresses are oh-so-sophisticated and create an edgy look when layered over a roll-neck.

Wash: Silk is extremely delicate, and although some silks are dry-clean only others can be hand-washed with a splash of liquid detergent in a small tub of cold water. Swish around for just a few minutes, rinse in clean water, then gently squeeze out the excess water, avoiding twisting or wringing the fabric. Lay the garment onto a towel and roll it up to remove excess water. Finally, leave it to dry flat on a rack – avoid wire hangers.

Iron: Use your iron’s low-level silk setting, and iron while slightly damp.

Store: Keep in a dry and dark space to avoid discolouring from the sun.

Linen

Linen dries quickly, is very absorbent and looks effortlessly stylish, making it a perfect choice for a hot and humid city like Hong Kong.

Wash: Handwash linen in lukewarm water or use the gentle cycle on your washing machine to avoid shrinking. Be sure not to overload the machine, which can twist garments. Dry linen items flat to maintain their shape.

Iron: Iron linen on a high setting while it’s still slightly damp, or starch table linens for an extra sharp look.

Store: Wrap linens in acid-free tissue paper, store in a very dry, dark space and avoid plastic containers.

Cashmere

During winter, it’s essential to wrap up warm without forgetting the style. Pick up a lightweight cashmere jumper or treat your feet to a cosy pair of cashmere socks.

Wash: Steer clear of the dry-cleaners and handwash it, like silk. But use lukewarm water to get those soap suds popping, then dry it flat in the exact same way.

Iron: Turn your cashmere garment inside out and use a fabric steamer or the lowest iron setting. Make slow, repetitive strokes across the fabric.

Store: Similar to linens, wrap cashmere in acid-free tissue paper and place in a well-aired, dust-free and damp-free storage space. Avoid those dreaded moths with cedar balls.

Wool

Wool comes in many weights, and due to its breathability and moisture management, it can keep you stylish all year long.

Wash: Spot clean your item, but if it needs a wash check the care label as many wool garments can be machine washed on a wool cycle. If you’re handwashing, use a mild detergent in cool water. Turn the item inside out before washing and leave it to soak for up to 30 minutes. After rinsing, press out the excess water and dry it flat.

Iron: Turn the piece inside out and cover it with a pressing sheet before ironing on a medium heat.

Store: Structured clothes like jackets should be on a firm hanger; fold other items into a cotton bag.
